CDI Organises Training Visit for Bougainville MP

^ Hon Magdalene Toroansi - MP Bougainville House of Representatives and Mr Les Gonye - Clerk Assistant Committees, Legislative Assembly, Parliament of NSW.

As part of its support for initiatives that enable Australian State and Territory Parliaments to assist Pacific Island Parliaments, CDI arranged for the new Chair of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee, Hon Magdalene Toroansi, to visit the New South Wales Parliament from 1-5 June 2009. The purpose of the visit was for Ms Toroansi to examine the role of the NSW Public Accounts Committee and gain a greater understanding of the role of parliamentary committee chairs by engaging with her NSW counterparts.

In organising this study visit and contributing to the associated costs, CDI is supporting the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) initiated twinning arrangement between the NSW and Bougainville Parliaments. The costs are being shared between CDI, the CPA and the NSW Parliament.

The Centre for Democratic Institutions (CDI) is a government-funded body that supports the efforts of new democracies in the Asia-Pacific region to strengthen their political systems. It provides training, technical assistance and peer support for parliamentarians and emerging leaders in Southeast Asia and the South Pacific, with a particular focus on Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Fiji.

The Australian Government established CDI in 1998. It is funded primarily by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID). One of the primary ways in which CDI works to promote democracy is through strengthening parliamentary governance and political parties. The Centre focusses on parliamentary and political party development, and conducts flagship training courses and policy-relevant research on these subjects.
