Indonesian Political Parties Study Program

In October 2005, CDI conducted a 10-Day study tour for invited representatives from Indonesia's seven major political parties. The itinerary included Newcastle and Canberra, and centred on attendance and observation of the Annual Conference of the NSW division of the Liberal Party of Australia held in Newcastle. The Program also called on the other major Australian political party secretariats, and recieved specific briefings on issues such as party polling, focus groups, platform and policy development, membership, and relationship between central party organisation and branches.

Outcomes from this program towards improving political governance and strengthening political processes and practice in the partner country included improved skills and knowledge for the visiting political party representatives on the building and maintaining of transparent and participatory internal party structures, processes and practices that are critical to strengthening the integrity and functioning of political parties and reflect the Australian Government's concern with strengthening the integrity and functioning of partner countries political parties.

Thanks must go to the National Democratic Institute (NDI) for International Affairs Indonesia office for their generous support and hard work in the organising of this activity.  In particular, CDI would like to extend heartfealt thanks to Stephanie Lynne and Maria Dinarsih.

The Centre for Democratic Institutions (CDI) is a government-funded body that supports the efforts of new democracies in the Asia-Pacific region to strengthen their political systems. It provides training, technical assistance and peer support for parliamentarians and emerging leaders in Southeast Asia and the South Pacific, with a particular focus on Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Fiji.

The Australian Government established CDI in 1998. It is funded primarily by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID). One of the primary ways in which CDI works to promote democracy is through strengthening parliamentary governance and political parties. The Centre focusses on parliamentary and political party development, and conducts flagship training courses and policy-relevant research on these subjects.
