Study Visit | National Parliament of PNG's Head of Human Resources

^ Mr Kingston Alu and CDI Deputy Director Quinton Clements.

The newly appointed head of Human Resources for the National Parliament of PNG, Mr Kingston Alu, visited the Australian and NSW Parliaments on a week-long study visit in September. The Serjeants-at-Arms of the Australian and NSW Parliaments were responsible for coordinating programs for Mr Alu's study visit, which was initiated by CDI following the succesful Professional Development Workshop for Melanesian National & Provincial Parliamentary Staff in Port Moresby in June this year.

Mr Alu is in the process of developing a comprehensive training program for the staff of the PNG Parliamentary Service. The aim is to upgrade the skills of staff and enable staff to move to different positions within the Parliamentary Service. By improving the capacity of staff, Mr Alu hopes to raise the quality of service provided to Members of Parliament. Since his appointment Mr Alu has initiated a number of reforms in this area. CDI is supporting these reforms through the facilitation of technical expertise as part of our ongoing assistance to the National Parliament of Papua New Guinea.

The Centre for Democratic Institutions (CDI) is a government-funded body that supports the efforts of new democracies in the Asia-Pacific region to strengthen their political systems. It provides training, technical assistance and peer support for parliamentarians and emerging leaders in Southeast Asia and the South Pacific, with a particular focus on Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Fiji.

The Australian Government established CDI in 1998. It is funded primarily by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID). One of the primary ways in which CDI works to promote democracy is through strengthening parliamentary governance and political parties. The Centre focusses on parliamentary and political party development, and conducts flagship training courses and policy-relevant research on these subjects.
