Solomon Islands Political Stability Workshops | Honiara

CDI is offering advice to the Solomon Islands government on the reform of their political party and parliamentary systems to promote greater political stability. Following a two-day conference to explore solutions to political instability and governance in Honiara in August 2008, CDI Director Ben Reilly and other international experts attended a conference to examine options for reforming the country's political party laws in September 2008 in Honiara. POLITICAL STABILITY AND GOVERNANCE IN SOLOMON ISLANDS: POTENTIAL FOR REFORM | Honiara | September 2008

The Solomon Star has reported on the August conference, which was organised by a Government five-member Working Committee established recently by Prime Minister Dr Derek Sikua. The conference is part of an ongoing consultative process to determine a most appropriate direction for parliamentary and political party integrity reform.

The Centre for Democratic Institutions (CDI) is a government-funded body that supports the efforts of new democracies in the Asia-Pacific region to strengthen their political systems. It provides training, technical assistance and peer support for parliamentarians and emerging leaders in Southeast Asia and the South Pacific, with a particular focus on Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Fiji.

The Australian Government established CDI in 1998. It is funded primarily by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID). One of the primary ways in which CDI works to promote democracy is through strengthening parliamentary governance and political parties. The Centre focusses on parliamentary and political party development, and conducts flagship training courses and policy-relevant research on these subjects.
