Community of Democracies Asia Roundtable

CDI is an active participant in the Community of Democracies, a US-led grouping of democratic governments and NGOs dedicated to the promotion of democracy throughout the world which acts as a caucus within the United Nations.

CDI Director Ben Reilly participated in the Community of Democracies Asia Roundtable organised by the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy, and held in Taipei January 23-25. The Asia Roundtable was the first event in the region to discuss progress towards the goals of Community of Democracies Ministerial Meeting which will take place in Mali at the end of 2007.

The Asia Roundtable attracted democracy promotion organisations from around the Asia-Pacific region, and featured presentations on democratic progress in Asia on issues such as rule of law, press freedom, election standards, gender equality, education for democracy, freedom of association, and the link between free enterprise and democracy.

The meeting was followed by a conference on "Transformations in New Democracies". Further information on both meetings is available here:

	Crawford School of Economics and Government	The Centre for Democratic Institutions (CDI) is a government-funded body that supports the efforts of new democracies in the Asia-Pacific region to strengthen their political systems. It provides training, technical assistance and peer support for parliamentarians and emerging leaders in Southeast Asia and the South Pacific, with a particular focus on Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Fiji. The Australian Government established CDI in 1998. It is funded primarily by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID). One of the primary ways in which CDI works to promote democracy is through strengthening parliamentary governance and political parties. The Centre focusses on parliamentary and political party development, and conducts flagship training courses and policy-relevant research on these subjects.
