Indonesia: Democracy and the Promise of Good Governance

CDI Director Ben Reilly was one of the speakers at an international seminar on 'Indonesia: Democracy and the Promise of Good Governance' held at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Jakarta last week.

Dr Reilly spoke on "The Role of Political Parties", and examined the ambitious attempts to engineer the development of parties in Indonesia, drawn from a chapter of a book on the same subject being launched by CSIS at the seminar. Other speakers at the event included Dr Andi Mallarangeng, Spokesman for the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Professor Hadi Soesastro, Executive Director of CSIS, and Mr Theo Sambuaga, Chair of Commission I in the Indonesian Parliament.

While in Indonesia, Dr Reilly also held meetings with Indonesian political party leaders and with local and international democracy support organisations in Jakarta, including the Friedrich Naumann Stiftung, the International Republican Institute, CETRO, and the Indonesian parliament.

The Centre for Democratic Institutions (CDI) is a government-funded body that supports the efforts of new democracies in the Asia-Pacific region to strengthen their political systems. It provides training, technical assistance and peer support for parliamentarians and emerging leaders in Southeast Asia and the South Pacific, with a particular focus on Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Fiji.

The Australian Government established CDI in 1998. It is funded primarily by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID). One of the primary ways in which CDI works to promote democracy is through strengthening parliamentary governance and political parties. The Centre focusses on parliamentary and political party development, and conducts flagship training courses and policy-relevant research on these subjects.
