CDI Deputy Director, Quinton Clements, visited Jakarta from 8 to 12 March 2008. The purpose of his visit was to discuss areas of co-operation with Indonesia's House of Representatives or Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat (DPR) and the Regional Representative Assembly or Dewan Perwakilan Daerah (DPD) as part of CDI's ongoing assistance to the Indonesian Parliament.

Mr Clements held discussions with the Acting Secretary-General of the DPR, Dra. Mr Clements also met with the Secretary-General of the DPD, Dr. Ir. Siti Nurbaya Bakar. Mr Clements held discussions with Members of DPR's Commission 1, Commission 11, the Budget Committee and the Committee on Inter-Parliamentary Co-operation; the Chairman of the Supreme Audit Board (BPK), Professor Anwar Nasution; and other organisations involved in parliamentary strengthening activities in Indonesia including the National Democratic Institute and the World Bank. Mr Clements also met with a number of donor and other non-government organizations with an interest in parliamentary assistance in Indonesia.

The Centre for Democratic Institutions (CDI) is a government-funded body that supports the efforts of new democracies in the Asia-Pacific region to strengthen their political systems. It provides training, technical assistance and peer support for parliamentarians and emerging leaders in Southeast Asia and the South Pacific, with a particular focus on Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Fiji.

The Australian Government established CDI in 1998. It is funded primarily by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID). One of the primary ways in which CDI works to promote democracy is through strengthening parliamentary governance and political parties. The Centre focusses on parliamentary and political party development, and conducts flagship training courses and policy-relevant research on these subjects.
