CDI Deputy Director Participates in ACPAC Meeting

CDI Deputy Director, Quinton Clements, attended the 2008 Australasian Council of Public Accounts Committees (ACPAC) Mid-Term Meeting from 28 - 30 May 2008 in Adelaide.

ACPAC's membership consists of the public accounts committee (or its equivalent) from every jurisdiction in Australia, as well as committees from New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Fiji and Solomon Islands.

Mr Clements was involved in a colloquium concerning the requisite conditions and institutions for a credible and effective system of public governance, finance and oversight. He spoke on the development of governance environments and institutions in the Pacific region - an issue of sustained importance within the ACPAC membership. CDI is building constructive relationships with parliamentary associations such as ACPAC in order to draw upon their networks and expertise in our work in strengthening parliaments in the region.

The Centre for Democratic Institutions (CDI) is a government-funded body that supports the efforts of new democracies in the Asia-Pacific region to strengthen their political systems. It provides training, technical assistance and peer support for parliamentarians and emerging leaders in Southeast Asia and the South Pacific, with a particular focus on Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Fiji.

The Australian Government established CDI in 1998. It is funded primarily by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID). One of the primary ways in which CDI works to promote democracy is through strengthening parliamentary governance and political parties. The Centre focusses on parliamentary and political party development, and conducts flagship training courses and policy-relevant research on these subjects.
