Special Measures for Women - Pacific Sub-regional Workshop | Port Moresby

CDI special adviser on gender issues Dr Sun-Hee Lee participated in the recent sub-regional workshop on special measures for women, organised by the Pacific Island Forum Secretariat on 24-26 September in Port Moresby. This workshop built on the outcomes of the 2006 Rarotonga meeting of women parliamentarians from the Forum Islands countries together with development partners, academics and civil society organisations.

The importance of special measures towards increasing the number of women in parliament was one of the key recommendations of the 2006 workshop, which agreed on the need for a series of sub-regional workshops to raise awareness on special measures vis-à-vis reserved seats and quotas and relevant electoral reforms aimed at improving the representation of women in parliament. The Secretariat commissioned study on barriers to advancing women’s representation in parliaments in the Pacific region formed the basis of this Port Moresby workshop.

The Centre for Democratic Institutions (CDI) is a government-funded body that supports the efforts of new democracies in the Asia-Pacific region to strengthen their political systems. It provides training, technical assistance and peer support for parliamentarians and emerging leaders in Southeast Asia and the South Pacific, with a particular focus on Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Fiji.

The Australian Government established CDI in 1998. It is funded primarily by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID). One of the primary ways in which CDI works to promote democracy is through strengthening parliamentary governance and political parties. The Centre focusses on parliamentary and political party development, and conducts flagship training courses and policy-relevant research on these subjects.
