CDI Links with Queensland & West Australian Universities

CDI has further developed its regional linkages within Australia with two leading research centres on Asia.

The Griffith Asia Institute in Brisbane and the Asia Research Centre at Murdoch University in Perth are important CDI partners for our work in Southeast Asia in particular. CDI Director Ben Reilly has recently visited both institutions as part of our efforts to build on this partnership.

At Griffith University, he gave a talk at the The Centre for Governance and Public Policy in late 2008 and has recently followed this up with a further visit to discuss the Griffith Asia Institute's planned contributions on future CDI research projects. At Murdoch University's Asia Research Centre in April this year, Prof Reilly presented an invited lecture on political reform in Asia to the "New Modes of Governance in Asia" seminar series.

Both of these visits were sponsored and paid by the host institution, external support which CDI gratefully acknowledges. Click on these links through to their websites:

The Centre for Democratic Institutions (CDI) is a government-funded body that supports the efforts of new democracies in the Asia-Pacific region to strengthen their political systems. It provides training, technical assistance and peer support for parliamentarians and emerging leaders in Southeast Asia and the South Pacific, with a particular focus on Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Fiji.

The Australian Government established CDI in 1998. It is funded primarily by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID). One of the primary ways in which CDI works to promote democracy is through strengthening parliamentary governance and political parties. The Centre focusses on parliamentary and political party development, and conducts flagship training courses and policy-relevant research on these subjects.
