CDI Launches Political Parties in the Pacific Islands

Edited by Roland Rich, with Luke Hambly and Michael G Morgan, Political Parties in the Pacific Islands is the latest volume from CDI. Published through Pandanus Books, it was launched 6 July 2006, and aims to serve as a benchmark reference work on the political parties of the Pacific and constitute an invaluable resource for students, scholars and researchers of the Pacific and international politics, with chapters on East Timor, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, Fiji and Samoa. Addressing the implications of the lack of established and effective political party systems across the Pacific, this articulate collection seeks to illuminate the underlying assumptions behind the importance of coherent and effective parties to overall democratic functioning.

See the launch flyer below, visit Pandanus books on the web to purchase your copy of Political Parties in the Pacific Islands, and listen to Roland Rich in conversation about the book with Graeme Dobell on ABC Radio's Asia Pacific:

The Centre for Democratic Institutions (CDI) is a government-funded body that supports the efforts of new democracies in the Asia-Pacific region to strengthen their political systems. It provides training, technical assistance and peer support for parliamentarians and emerging leaders in Southeast Asia and the South Pacific, with a particular focus on Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Fiji.

The Australian Government established CDI in 1998. It is funded primarily by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID). One of the primary ways in which CDI works to promote democracy is through strengthening parliamentary governance and political parties. The Centre focusses on parliamentary and political party development, and conducts flagship training courses and policy-relevant research on these subjects.
