Research

CDI conducts cutting-edge research on parliaments and political parties in our focus countries within Asia and the Pacific with the strong involvement of researchers from relevant institutions involved in research and outreach for democracy promotion across Australia and the region.

To strengthen its research, CDI maintain networks with the international scholarly community and practitioners through participation in academic workshops and conferences, the funding of research on CDI's core areas (parliaments and political parties) and the facilitation of policy-research interface, including lectures and seminars for Australian government officers.  CDI endeavours to disseminate its research findings to Australian and regional institutions and stakeholders, to promote dialogue on the functioning of democratic institutions in the region.

Our commitment to engaging regional researchers is best evidenced by the mix of contributing authors to our publication on 'Political Parties in the Pacific' which includes contributions from authors based at The University of the South Pacific in Fiji (USP), The East-West Center in Hawaii (EWC), The Timor Institute of Development Studies in Dili (TIDS), The National University of Samoa in Apia (NUS), and the University of Canberra (UC).

Similarly, CDI's forthcoming UNU Press publication on "Political Parties in Conflict Prone Societies" features authors from Africa, Europe, The Americas, and the Asia-Pacific Region.

The Centre for Democratic Institutions (CDI) is a government-funded body that supports the efforts of new democracies in the Asia-Pacific region to strengthen their political systems. It provides training, technical assistance and peer support for parliamentarians and emerging leaders in Southeast Asia and the South Pacific, with a particular focus on Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Fiji.

The Australian Government established CDI in 1998. It is funded primarily by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID). One of the primary ways in which CDI works to promote democracy is through strengthening parliamentary governance and political parties. The Centre focusses on parliamentary and political party development, and conducts flagship training courses and policy-relevant research on these subjects.
